Microorganisms/Microbials (e.g., fungi, mold (filamentous fungi), bacteria, etc.) are part of the natural environment and are ubiquitous in nature. When mold is found outdoors, its purpose, for example, it to break down dead organic matter; however, when found indoors, mold growth has the potential to cause adverse health effects. Molds can produce allergens (substances that can cause allergic reactions) and irritants; thus, inhaling or touching mold/mold spores may cause allergic reactions in sensitive individuals.
Most bacteria generally are considered to be environmental. Their sources may be outdoor, indoor dust, water damage, or any combination. The presence of some common environmental bacteria in indoor environments generally is of concern because of their ability to produce hypersensitivity pneumonitis in exposed individuals, as well as their opportunistic pathogenicity potential.
Bacteria and fungi will grow on building materials if moisture is available. Background levels of airborne bacteria and fungi change frequently inside buildings as a result of human activity, especially operation of mechanical air handling systems. Building conditions that allow excessive growth of bacteria or fungi can lead to occupants developing various specific medical symptoms or other complaints (e.g., hypersensitivity pneumonitis” in sensitized persons).
Sources can include air handling system condensate, cooling towers, water damaged materials, high humidity indoor areas, damp organic material and porous wet surfaces, humidifiers, hot water systems, outdoor excavations, plants, animal excreta, animals and insects, food and food products.
Microbial investigations can assist in the determination of a mold/bacteria problem, offer timely and cost effective solutions, and provide for corrective actions. AM H&S can assist in evaluating an unwanted microbial problem through investigative techniques such as air monitoring and surface contamination evaluations using analytical partners accredited by AIHA-LAP LLC , New York ELAP, etc. AM H&S has been providing microbial investigative and quality consultation services affecting commercial buildings, public facilities (schools, military installations, hospitals), etc., for over twenty (20) years.
